An exposed unlacquered brass shower turns the plumbing itself into the design. The pipework, valve and rain head sit on the wall in solid brass and slowly warm in tone. This guide explains the choices, from exposed versus concealed valves to wall versus floor-mounted tub fillers.
Exposed vs concealed shower systems
| Exposed | Concealed (in-wall) | |
|---|---|---|
| Look | Visible brass pipework, vintage and architectural | Only trim, head and handles show |
| Installation | Mounts on the finished wall, good for renovations | Valve set inside the wall before tiling |
| Access | Easy to reach for service | Behind tile or an access panel |
| Best for | Statement bathrooms, outdoor showers | Minimal, streamlined bathrooms |

Is unlacquered brass good in a shower?
Yes. Brass does not rust. Steam and water speed up the patina, so a shower system darkens faster than a kitchen faucet, usually within months. Expect a warm, slightly uneven tone, darker where water runs and lighter on the handles. Mineral spots from hard water fade into the patina; a quick wipe after showering keeps the tone even.
Choosing a tub filler
Floor-mounted
Rises from the floor beside a freestanding tub. The most sculptural option. It needs supply lines under the floor, planned before the floor is finished.
Wall-mounted
Fills the tub from the wall behind it. Simpler to plumb and ideal when the tub sits against a wall.
Telephone style
A deck or freestanding filler with a handset like a vintage telephone. Classic English bathrooms are built around it.

Planning with your plumber
- Confirm the distance between hot and cold supplies and the outlet height for the rain head.
- Check the height of the ceiling so the riser and head sit comfortably above the tallest user.
- Floor-mounted fillers need the supply lines placed before the floor is finished.
- Ask about local code for valves and anti-scald requirements. Your plumber will know what applies where you live.
- Need a little more reach? We make custom-length solid brass shower arm extensions.
Care
- Rinse with clean water and wipe dry after use when you can.
- Use mild soap only. No bleach, ammonia or abrasive cleaners.
- Descale the rain head occasionally with a vinegar and water soak (head only, not the whole system).
- Polish with a brass polish if you want the bright finish back.
From an Astoria studio to a Marrakech workshop
Every Brassdoria piece starts as a drawing in our studio in Astoria, New York, and is made by hand in Marrakech, where metalworking families have shaped brass and copper for generations. The hammer marks you see are not a pattern applied by a machine. They are the record of one artisan working one sheet of metal.
We make every piece to order, in solid metal, never plated. That is why we can stand behind it with a 5-year warranty against manufacturing defects, 30-day returns and free express tracked shipping to the US and Canada.

FAQ
Does unlacquered brass corrode in a shower?
It oxidizes on the surface (the patina) but does not rust through.
Are exposed showers harder to clean?
There is more visible metal to wipe, but no hidden trim. A soft cloth after use is enough.
Can I use an exposed system in a renovation?
Yes. That is one of its advantages, because it mounts on the finished wall.
Do you make custom sizes?
