A gallery rail is a low brass rail fixed along the front or edges of a shelf. It keeps plates, books and jars from sliding off, and it turns a plain plank into something that looks built-in and old. It is one of the least expensive ways to make a kitchen look custom.

Where gallery rails work
- Open kitchen shelves holding plates, cups and spice jars.
- Bookcases and library shelves, where a rail keeps leaning books in line. See the brass bookshelf rail.
- Bar shelves for bottles and glassware.
- Bathroom shelves above a vanity or toilet.
- Plate racks and pantry shelves.

How to measure and choose
- Length: measure the shelf front. Most people stop the rail 1 to 2 in short of each end so the posts sit on solid wood.
- Height: 2 to 3 in for spice jars and cups, 3 to 4 in for plates standing upright, taller for books.
- Posts: one post roughly every 12 to 16 in keeps the rail rigid.
- Finish: unlacquered brass that will patina, or one of the aged and copper finishes if you want the look straight away.
- Three-sided rails wrap the front and both ends, useful on floating shelves.

Fitting a gallery rail
- Mark the post positions along the shelf, measured from the center outward so the spacing is even.
- Drill pilot holes the size recommended for the screws.
- Screw the posts down, then slide or fix the rail into place.
- Check the rail is level and tighten everything once it sits straight.
On stone or glass shelves, ask a fabricator to drill the holes.
Pot rails and brass pipe shelving
The same idea, a brass rail fixed to the wall, also works at full scale. A solid copper pot rail with S-hooks frees cupboard space and keeps pans in reach. A wall-mounted brass pipe shelving unit gives you two to six tiers of open storage with the same warm metal. A brass picture rail lets you rearrange art without new holes.

From an Astoria studio to a Marrakech workshop
Every Brassdoria piece starts as a drawing in our studio in Astoria, New York, and is made by hand in Marrakech, where metalworking families have shaped brass and copper for generations. The hammer marks you see are not a pattern applied by a machine. They are the record of one artisan working one sheet of metal.
We make every piece to order, in solid metal, never plated. That is why we can stand behind it with a 5-year warranty against manufacturing defects, 30-day returns and free express tracked shipping to the US and Canada.
